Piment d’Espelette or ‘Ezpeletako Biperra’ is the only spice in France to be awarded with an Appellation d’Origine Protégée (A.O.P)! Obtained in 2000, the A.O.P. was given to reward the collective work of a dozen passionate producers, committed to promoting this exceptional spice. A mission accomplished! By 2009, the industry had around 130 producers working to strict specifications. The A.O.P. also promotes the product’s strong identity, attached to a region, made up of 10 municipalities located south-east of Bayonne.
Only the powder, the rope and the fresh produce benefit from the celebrated ‘piment d’Espelette’ appellation, recognisable by the unique A.O.P. badge appearing in Basque Country colors. Piment d’Espelette offers exceptional aromatic qualities. Delicate, subtle aromas with a mild heat on the palate.
You can enjoy the unique qualities of piment d’Espelette spice in starters through to desserts, in your everyday cooking as well as more festive cuisine. Store in a cool place, protected from sunlight and consume quickly to enjoy the spice’s aromas at their best.
